On May 31, 2017, in the square "Karagaily" at the intersection of Kabanbai batyr and Nauryzbai batyr streets of Almaty, an official ceremony of opening a monument to the victims of the famine of 1931-1933 took place. Mayor of Almaty city Bauyrzhan Baibek, deputy chairman of the Assembly of the people of Kazakhstan Khamedov Abilfas Muslimovich, director of KSU "Public contracts" of the apparatus of Mayor of Almaty city Murunova Zhannat Sharapkhanovna, chairman of Ossetian cultural enlightenment center "Irnoas" Mamsurov Kazbek Vladimirovich, other chairmen of ethno-cultural association, Descendants of repressed and victims of famine, public figures, scientists, activists and youth of the city.

Mayor of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baybek noted that the monument was opened on the direct order of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. In the period from 1918 to 1933 in Kazakhstan, according to different data, more than three million people died, including from 1931 to 1933 about 1 million 700 thousand people died. The victims of the repressions of 1937-1938 more than 100 thousand people of Kazakhstan.

"Today, on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions, we are opening a monument to the victims of the famine of 1931-1933 to perpetuate this lasting pain of our people. On behalf of the Head of State, last year we announced a competition to create a sketch of the future monument. Among the more than 20 proposed works, by the decision of the state commission, the project of Dulat Usenbayev, Aidos Burkitbaev and Kanat Beguliev was selected - the sculpture "Ana". The image of the mother pressing the child, exhausted from hunger, embodies all the sorrow of the Kazakh people. Mother is the source of all things, the foundation of the nation, the guarantee of the future," B. Baibek said.
