May 31 - Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression

2017 May 31, in Victory Park was the Laying - the day of remembrance, the worship of the spirit of the best representatives of the Kazakh people who fell victims of repression. Their names are forever inscribed in the history of the Kazakh people. Political repression of the twentieth century is one of the sad pages of our history, when thousands and thousands of people died innocent. The cruel punishers of the past had no mercy for young children, for helpless old men, or for defenseless women. Our civic duty is to remember these bloody events, not to forget the names of those who became innocent victims of those terrible years, to keep the memory of them forever, to lay flowers to the obelisks erected in honor of the victims of political repressions.

Victims of political repression of Mayor of Atyrau region Nurlan Askarovich Nogayev took part in the memorial day. According to modern research of our historians, about 2 million people died in our country. Millions of our citizens were forced to leave their native places and wander in foreign countries. In the years of repression, all statesmen, including prominent Alash figures, writers and poets, enlighteners were persecuted. True patriots with a noble heart, high aspirations, people who can lead the people and lead the masses, were subjected to total destruction.

This disaster affected not only the Kazakhs, many peoples of the Soviet Union suffered from it. In those gloomy years, entire nations were forcibly driven from their lands; more than 1.5 million people were deported to the Kazakh steppes. Only in 1937, 1350 people were subjected to repression, 300 people were shot.

In the bloody era of the Soviet empire over 20 camps operated in our country, where more than 800 thousand of our citizens were exiled. In the period from 1937 to 1938, 103,000 people were persecuted; more than 27,000 people were shot.

On this day, we pay tribute to not only the relatives of the victims of repression, but we also worship the spirit of all our ancestors.

The next generation must always remember those who laid the foundations for our independence.
